After a season of using the childrens sleeping bags from tentingt I've decided I'm going to cut down a large duvet and make the children their own bunk duvets.  Sleeping bags were ok - whilst the kids stayed in them, but anyone with the triple bunk layout and wriggly children will understand that climbing up to the top bunk with little headroom to try and put a sleeping child back into their bag is a tricky manoeuvre!!

Sooo the rear bunks are around 65cms wide - I'm thinking of getting a kingsize duvet cutting it into two and then cutting down a couple of girl & boy single duvet covers with a continuous pattern or plain pattern and just running up the edges with my sewing machine.

Im thinking the width of the duvets should be around 100cms so they cover them well is that enough do you think?

What tog duvet do you think I should get them do you think - is 4.5tog warm enough or 10 tog too warm.

Anyone done this already - anything I should be considering before I race off to Dunelm Mill???

We went and bought single duvets and covers while we were away in february.  They are too big for the bunks and 10.5 tog is too warm.

I might get my wife to try and reduce the size of ours.  If you go ahead let me know how it works out.

I'm planning to do the same thing!

I'd say the width should be about right - wide enough to cover them without having it trailing over the side & ending up dragging itself onto the floor.

I was planning to take some off each side of the duvet covers so the poppers/buttons stay central.  Otherwise they could end up too much to one side leaving a narrower gap & making it difficult to get the duvet in.

In summer we only use 4.5 tog duvets in the van.  We always have plenty of fleece blankets available in case anyone feels chilly.  For winter I'm going to make a larger, thicker version of the baby sleeping bags for DS(6) to stop him wriggling out http://www.slumbersac.co.uk/simply.php

I have just bought bunk duvets and covers from Jonic. From memory I think they are 100cm wide. I bought 4.5 tog as that is what we use all year round on our bed in the van. We use blankets if we are cold.

In our previous van, we used children's sleeping bags opened out to use as duvets. They worked fine. Neither of mine like to sleep in a sleeping bag!

Hi, we did the same, although were in a tent. my 2 just couldnt get comfy & we had a spare king size douvet (10tog) and a spare douvet cover. Its now alot better and they can get comfy. My youngest likes the douvet right other her, it was hard ina sleeping bag, but she can pull it right over now.

We found a standard double duvet a perfect fit when cut into two to fit bunks on our caravan. A double duvet cover also works the same way, you might need another button or press stud to help seal the open end. Typically, the standard single duvet cover is too large to keep the cut to size duvet in place. Our bunks are 70cm wide and do not easily allow for the duvet to tuck under. Instead, we put another sheet or fleece banket over the top of the duvet and tuck this thin layer in. We bought three double duvets and three double duvet sets to make up our double bed and three childrens single beds. That left a spare children's duvet and pillow case, which always comes in handy if one needs a wash . Its a personal choice, but the caravan looks better with one duvet pattern throughout, rather than a mixture of colours and characters.
