Hi all,

Ok first off I have my hands up ... yes I have crept in from the other side under the radar...im a tent camper and dont have a caravan im afraid.

What I am interested in knowing is what sort of stand alone heaters do you all use in your vans over and above the fitted units? Also for those of you that run a gas Propex system can you tell me how noisy you find it and also how much power it takes from the battery over a 24hr period ?

Many thanks

Gary

Hi 2gocampin, In the colder nights, use a small amp 240V Fan Heater,on low setting, find thats ok and quiet, and keeps the van warm, no other heater on at night.

Hi jhsw,

Thanks for the reply, sorry should have said non electric heaters. We have various options while on EHU its when off EHU that we are looking for.

Fan heaters are good at what they do but can be noisy in the dead of night in a tent. What I am trying to get my head around is the potential danger of gas, paraffin or diesel heaters in an enclosed area such as a caravan when compared to a tent ?

A caravan too me is far more air tight than a tent, yet caravan supply stores sell gas heaters and dont seem to have a problem with it ? So is it just the tent fraternity that are getting carried away with the danger of fumes or do you guys know something we dont?

This is off the back of my latest attempt to achieve fume free heat for our tent by building in a Propex heater into our trailer and piping the hot air into the tent through a conduit. The level of heat is great but the 2 issues I have is again noise from the pumped air flow when at night (annoying loud whooshing) and also the surprising amount of power the system is useing in a 24hr period.

Basically Im possibly back at the drawing board and looking for a solution.

I think you will find that gas heaters installed in caravans have air intakes and flues direct to the exterior and independent of the air in the living space.

I understand that you all have factory fitted units that are vented but its any additional free standing units that interest me as there seems to be a number suitable for caravans, so why not a tent is what I am trying to work out ?

Hi there, we don't actually use anything - just dress warmly & have very warm sleeping bags & duvets. Never ever have used EHU or any heaters when tenting so as the caravan is a lot warmer, we've never bothered !

I also don't understand why cravan places would be selling stand alone gas heater (I never actually knew they did till reading your post) as like you say a caravan is an awful lot more air tight than a tent.  Hopefully someone can enlighten us though ! I have a feeling someone will....

Aren't the standalone heaters for use in the awning?

I have never found that I needed anything other than the heater already in the van. Takes a while to heat up but once it does it gets nice and toasty (Mine has an old Carver 1800 heater). For the awning, as we never have the option of EHU, I use and Origo spirit (meths) heater that is surprisingly affective, and is also a good emergency cooking stove.

Wouldn't think of using a standalone gas heater in the 'van we have a fire if needed, electric wise we have a small oil filled radiator, for the awning a fan heater. Gas heaters would weigh an awful lot and take up a lot of room!

Not really. We use one of these in our awing which gives off a lot of heat for quite a small size. OK it uses cartridges which aren't the most economical fuel source in the world but are obtainable everywhere.

Regards, Brian.

Yes we have one of the small ones with cartridges from our camping days, but I was thinking of a more substantial type sorry should have said!

Hi 2gocampin, Have you thought about Halorgon heaters, and powered from 12V Battery, connect 12DC to AC invertor to battery plug in AC heater to invertor, No fumes,No noise, But light from Halergon heater could be problem for you,Have a look at the Maplin site there are solar type batterys £25, inverters, all sort of equipment that may give you a solution to your problem, not sure of amount of curent used for these heaters, though the technical guys on here will be able to help you with this, hope this has given you an other line of thought, and get you off the drawing board with your idea.

I'm a tent camper and I'm very satisfied for years with my Campingaz Bluecat. No open fire, independant from EHU.
