I wondered what age do you think it is appropriate for a child to go into a bunk? My mam and dad have got a bailey pageant avengure (sp?). They sleep in the lounge bit and I would be sleeping the back bit with DD.
DD won't sleep with anybody, so we both can't go in the made up double. So one of us would have to go in the bunk above. DD is just over 25mths old now and we wouldn't really be going out in the van until she is 27 or 28mths old (so nearly 2 1/2 years).
I'm within the weight limit of the bunk, so that isn't a restriction.
What are your thoughts? She is currently in a toddler bed at home with a bed rail/guard thing to stop her rolling out.
Hi ours was just two when we got the van and he has been in either the top or lower bunk ever since. primarily though he sleep in the bottom. We had a thomas the tank engine ready bed for him. he has never fallen out or have i ever put cushions on the floor.
I guess you have to go with your own gut feeling on this one. My son went into the middle bunk of our triple bunk last July and he was 3 & 3mths and I was a bit nervous about it, but this was mainly because there wasn't a bed rail so I bought a wood coloured clamp on one from Ikea which worked like a dream - maybe you could attach something like this to your existing bunk bed guard for extra height, but I don't know your vans layout so it may not work.
The layout is one of the those bunks that you put together over the dinette double bed thing.
I think, I'll have a look when I go up to see the van for the first time. DD is a good sleeper and rarely gets out of her bed at home once awake. She shouts for us to get her, so I'm not really worried about her trying to climb down the ladder or anything. It's just that they are quite high up if she did ever try to climb down or indeed rolled over too much.
We use one of those Ikea bed rails on her z-bed thing at my mam and dads, so it'll be easy enough to take that with us when we go for a look.
I didn't think about the soft landing bit, although she would drop onto me (& DH if he is with us). I think I will try her out in it if I think the side rails are high enough.
Our grandaughter is happy to sleep on the top bunk and shes nearly 4, I wouldnt put her up there any younger, as shes now got a better understanding than she had a few months ago regarding what would happen if she tried to get down without our help and suffered a tumble.
We are rather Lucky though as our bunk is designed with a mesh protection gaurd to help prevent tumbles out of bed which goes the entire length of the bunk and is fixed by sturdy poppers which were fitted to the van from new, similar to the ones found on some Motorhome overcab beds, Theres also a woodern gaurd to the centre of the bunk for when the child gets older, and is wanting to have the ladder in place, or a small adult is sleeping up there as its got a max load of 11st.
