Some traditional porches will fir in the awning rail at one end as well as the top. The other end is usually attached to a pole close the the van wall - often with cushionig to avoid damage to the van.
The lightweights such as the likes of the sunncamp 260 generally now rely on vertical poles next to the van although the older models may not have the vertical poles. Yes you can pass a box of sugar puffs through the gap on some but as we don't eat sugar puffs we don't find it a problem.
They are much easier to erect.
