hi, i have a 1990 swift musketeer EK, with a maxol monte carlo 2000 oven in it, and the oven is light by a match, and stays light, but does not heat very well, it stays at the same level it was at when light, or can be turned down, but cannot be turned up, does anyone know how this can be resolved? thanks
and does anyone know if the oven can be removed easily? of its a job for a pro? thanks!
oaken14............We have the same oven as yours. To be honest not sure if ours is the 2000 or 3000 but are probably similar anyway. We had the same problem as yours. I removed the oven and cleaned out the pipes and the jet and is working fine now. Not a difficult job if you take your time.
hi, i have removed the oven burner, and the jet, and a little deris came out of them, i refitted them, and it is now operating a little bit better, but since i only got in from work about 6, i didnt have much time, or light, to do much more, but tomorrow im going to remove the burner and the jet again, and back blow it with th compressor, because im prety sure that its down to a blockage, because now that its been cleaned a little, when you quickly tuen it to full the flames do shoot up, but they quickly die down again, so the sudden surge of pressure if over coming the blockage i think.
did you remove and clean all of the gas pipes, or just the one that connects directly to the oven, because i feel that cleaning out that pipe is probably what is really needed.
is your caravan the same model as mine? 1990 Sprite Musketeer?
No, didn't clean all of the pipes just the ones near to the burner. I also blew through the jet and worked a bit better but ended up clearing it with a bit of soft wire and that did the trick. That was 2 years ago and still going well. Our van is a '93 Swift Challenger.
took the burner and the jet out, and got the seal pick into the burner, as some of the holes were blocked with cheese or something, but that was only maby one or two holes, and I then blew the burner and jet with the compressor, its working a lot better, but its still not turning all the way to full bung! but we're having very cold weather the now its maby the weather that's not helping either.
is it just rubber gas hoses that run along the chassis, until l it get to the appliances then it changes to metal pipes? I might try disconnecting the metal pipe at both ends and blowing it out when the snow disappears. I'v have heard that they tend to get blocked with gunk.
do you have an Electrolux RM212 fridge? because I'm curious to know what the clear plastic plug on the bottom left at the back of the fridge is for? is for when using the gas for the fridge, as iv only ever used the electrics on the fridge.
oaken14................Just a thought, are you using butane or propane ? Butane doesn't work well in low temperature whereas propane works well below freezing point. The little window that you describe at the rear of the fridge is where you can see the blue pilot light when running on gas.
ehm, this is where I cant remember, its the red/orange bottle, I cant remember which one that is.
I thought that might have been what the little window was for, wasn't sure because iv never used it on gas. I'm 20, and my mum and dad are getting a new caravan, and they have given the sprite to me and my brother, and well its been having a few little problems, and because its only really been used by my mum and dad, I know how to use everything in the caravan, but something have parts iv never had to use before so I get intrigued.
I'm starting to get the hang of repairing the caravan lol
Thanks Den, your about the only real help iv been getting here lol. I very much appreciate it!
thanks. so my problem isn't with the temperatures I'm having.
when your using your oven is there a visible heightening of the flame right till to get to the maximum, because I'm now getting a higher flame than before and it gets to about may be 3/4 of the way to max when the flame stops getting larger, so I dunno if that just where it reaches its max flame height, or whether there is still a blockage, but when the control is quickly turned from low to max, the flame height does jump up, and go back down again. so I'm not sure.
Peter..........Ours is about the same as you describe of yours. The flame more or less reaches its maximum just before the control knob reaches maximum. I suppose they'll all have little differences, especially after the number of years they have been used.
I have to say something here, this same question from Peter was asked on PC forum and I answered it within the hour, with I might add the correct reason as Den repeated here.
Also, Metz on here, and JohnL strongly on PC, suggested getting it serviced by a professional.
Well no reply on PC to me, and nothing I've read but faffing around trying to fix it on here, still as far as I've read not cleared the root cause, or indeed understood what that is? so unless by shear luck, still unlikely to be fixed?!
Now I read about 'getting my head around caravan repairs!
I'm sorry but learning how to fix gas appliances is not about getting your head around it, it's about FULLY understanding what you are doing and FULLY understanding what is right and above all SAFE when you are finished.
I say this because it will KILL you given half a chance, and worse, I or others on this forum might be parked next to you.
So please stop faffing around and take the sensible option, get it serviced by a professional...please
I may not be a trained gas technician, but I am a trained mechanical engineer, and I fully understand health and safety, and I understand the tasks which I can safely carry out.
at the moment I have removed the oven burner and the jet, which is completely safe, as the instructions on how to do this task are printed in the owners manual of the oven, and I am lead to believe that if this was an unsafe task to do, then they would not print the instructions on how to do it in the manual. There is nothing dangerous about blowing air through the jet or the oven burner.
when it comes to working with gas appliances, I will only go as far as disconnecting the gas, and disconnecting pipes, I do not disassemble parts which I do not understand how they work or how to reassemble.
As for my comment about getting my head around caravan repairs, I was mearly suggesting that I am getting into it, as I have replaced interior bulbs, and skylights, and cleaned the oven burner and jet now.
so there for I take severe offence to your comment of me "faffing around", I am simply carrying out repairs which I am able to do myself, following the instructions in the owner manual, and advice of others, and so far the advice I have been given and followed has not been dangerous.
so I would prefer if before you make conclusions about my methods you ascertain their abilities first

Sorry you don't like it but it's not meant to please. it is possibly to save your or others lives?
As for the other, 3214 nearly all technical posts answered on here alone!
I'm afraid after 7 years answering those and 1000's more, I'm rather well qualified to access abilities, I learnt long ago, the answer to it is all in how the question is asked?
Though your comments make me defensive, I must thank you for your concerns for safety, though as I have stated, the method which I have tried, is not a large, difficult, or dangerous task to perform, and is described and illustrated how to do in the user manual.
So as long as I follow the instructions and connected the one gas supply pipe to the jet, and the once screw that holds the burner in place, which I have, then no one need have concern. which brings me to the idea that your ability assessing, may not be as good as you think.
I am in no way saying I know everything, as if I did I would not be looking on here for advice, but I do know that I am able to judge what I cant and cannot do.
