Have you ever been caught out with narrow roads or low bridges with your 'van when you have been following the directions from your GPS?   Has anyone tried this software - http://www.hgvsolutions.com/index.htm

I have also posted this in the Motorhome section as it is relevant to both Caravanners and Motorhome users

Looks interesting. Anyone ever used it? I'm tempted, but I don't want to screw up my sat nav!

Anyone got this yet?

Much cheaper than buying a new Satnav for trucks etc. too.

Just sent the link to hubby to have a look at. We have the truckers atlas but its such a huge book, too big to take in the car but useful at thome to check route first.

I never bother with Satnag.I use the AA route planner and then check it against a good map. Where the route involves unclassified roads then I use google street view and do a virtual tour.I find this invaluable as you can see the area and pick out landmarks for reference points to look out for when driving. Saves all the "is it this turn or the one 100 yrds further up".

Has anyone called them to find out about ProTour (the version specifically for caravans and motorhomes)?

There's no prices on the website for it - looking at the lorry version though £50 seems a bit steep for the amount I would use it. Just wondered if the ProTour version is any cheaper.

I'll give them a call tomorrow and will post on here with their answer. No one seems to have used the software so that seems to be the only way

I have just phoned HGV Solutions. They do a package called "Protour" and it is the software that is supplied to the CC and the C&CC.

The difference seems to be that it shows Supermarkets etc - more the sort of things that are relevant to Caravanners and Motorhomes

I had "truck route" on an earlier satnav and frankly I didn't rate it.

Can't say the normal Garmin route on my new one has ever taken me on a road unsuitable for a caravan (with care).  If there's a low bridge there's usually plenty warning before you get there.

I did manage to hit a height restriction on the autoroute in France though - fortunately the bike gear levers caught it (on the roof rack) and very little damage.

Still to live that one down

Used in conjunction with a good map, the standard route shouldn't let you down and even truck drivers find themselver where they shouldn't be due to glitches.

We all have the most sophisticated route planned - its between our ears. Everything else just provides bits of info for our brains to use.
