Hi All,
After being tuggers for about 10 yrs the time has come to sell our caravan as we are swapping to a motorhome.
Lots of reasons but mainly I hate towing and as I no longer work in school hols it makes sense for me to be able to go away with the children while Mr Petrolhead is at work.
I know all the pros & cons but did wonder how many others on here have swapped over too?
Ps Anyone want to buy our Caravan?
Yes I did swapped over and swapped back lol I didn't really like driving out for the day to visit somewhere and leaving all our belongings in the motor home. Also the insurance was heavy and i couldn't justify is sitting around tax'ed mot'ed doing nothing but that just my opinion.
Nope, never had a motorhome but did hire one once for a holiday (with friends years ago) certainly can see why it's better for you Mrs Petrolhead. For us though a caravan makes more sense, same reasons as Posse.
If your caravan is going for a tenner I'll be interested ! Lol. About all I can afford atm

I miss my motorhome (well a small Romahome actually) simply for the ease in getting it on and off the drive. But it was too expensive for me to have two vehicles on the road, and apart from the drive thing, it's lovely to have a separate vehicle when you get where you're going! All that packing away so you can go out somewhere was hard.
So it was a case for me of hard to get on/off the drive (caravan) - vs - hard packing up so I could use it on/off site (campervan).
The caravan won in the end through sheer economics. Still miss my Roma though! LOL
We had M/H for 7 months.. Back to caravan. Expensive little try that was. All that putting away to go out for a day, looking for parking.. At least we tried. We find it much better tugging.
The one concern I would have about having a largish motorhome is that there are so many car parks with height barriers and we noticed this year that there are more signs up saying that motorhomes are not allowed to park along sea fronts. I also would worry about the fact that when parked up, especially away from the main roads/promenades, any no-gooder would know that you would have things like TVs, DVD players and perhaps other valuables inside
We have always lusted after a motorhome. We hardly use the car when on site as we cycle everywhere so we don't really need any other transport. But justifying the expense is difficult. For the same level of comfort as we have in our caravan, we would need a fairly large one which would cost 4 or 5 times the cost of the caravan, plus the cost of keeping it on the road ie tax, insurance, MOT etc. The difference in price to a caravan is so huge it is almost ridiculous. Plus on our main holidays we tend to stay in one place for a week or so, because of this a motorhome would be of no great advantage to us. OK we have to tow, but we don't mind that now. Each to his own and for us it is a caravan - for the moment anyway !
Plus something I've always wondered. Do motorhomes have 4 wheel drive ? If not how do they manage on muddy CL's etc or is it ok just because you're not towing anything ?
The motorhomers haven't noticed this thread yet! Just wait for it, they'll be here with all guns blazing.
We're caravanners but just remarked, on site at the weekend, that there seem to be proportionately more and more motorhomes around. Perhaps it's our imagination.

There's a thread on the Under Canvas section - Camping vs Caravanning. I've been desperately trying to resist giving my three pennorth worth !
We have a motorhome and agree with the comments on here especially recently with all the height barriers everywhere, we are actually thinking of changing to a caravan to be able to have a car when on site, we have electric bikes but with the winter coming its not practical to go shopping and out for the evening etc on your bikes is it? and its quite cold and wet in the winter to be cycling everywhere.
This might have been an expensive decision as we bought a new one at the nec this year and we would lose too much to change it now.
We lost loads when we changed last year but had to as we had masses of problems with it, thank god not big problems with this on eonly minor ones like the awning light and the broken bed support, and before you say it its on Tez's side and not mine and he's the skinny one!!!
Our motorhome is up for sale as we are going back to a caravan, this is after using motorhomes for the last 5 years, prior to that we had caravans for twenty years.
Our motorhome is a fairly large one at 7.3m so it is not a vehicle that you could use to nip anywhere. We mainly used ours abroad but to use one in this country and hope to park it somewhere sensible would be fairly useless.
Anywhere I have changed my Volvo V70 for a Volvo XC90 to use as a tow car so all I want now is someone to buy the motorhome ( Burstner Solano T710, £36000 ) and then I can buy a new caravan in time to go to Spain at the end of Jan.
Thanks for the replies everyone, lots to read and think about.
We rally a lot at DA sites close to home throughout the year so for wkends away would be taking pushbikes but also our small car possibly if Mr Petrolhead meets us on site when he finishes work.
We are looking at German Hymer type motorhomes so we can have the same sort of living space that we are used to in a caravan ( UK pants weather too )and main holidays would be in Europe mostly so will be getting LHD model.
Money wise we have a 3 yr old caravan bought brand new and finances dictate whatever we get for our caravan is close to what we will be spending on a motorhome so around £10-£12K as not got any more to spend as need cars for work too!
I am not anti caravans as we have had one for 10 yrs or so and would never tell anyone not to have one but as I put in my original post our circumstances have changed job wise so it will be easier for me to go away with the children on my own in a motorhome as I couldn't do that in the van as an scared of towing - I know typically girly & I have done a towing course but cannot cope with the wag of the van when anything big goes past - just me I know being silly but there you are!
Not a good time to sell the van I suppose and typically we have found our ideal motorhome now as well - gosh I am soo impatient lol!!
