Is there any reason why someone would choose to have no jockeywheel on their caravan?
We were slowly driving around looking for a pitch when we happened upon another fellow caravanner having a hard time manouvering his unit into a pitch. Eventually he decided all was fine and proceeded to unhitch using the corner steadies. Surely this is bad for the frame of the van?
we've seen the same thing before, even seen a van with it's wheels taken off and just standing on it's steadies, I just can't for the life of me think why they would do it

At the start of the journey there was indeed a jockey wheel on't 'van. Unfortunately the caravanner neglected to tighten the clamp causing the jockey wheel to drop onto the road & become bent & twisted. The caravanner stopped & removed the remains of the jockey wheel.
On arrival at the site he had no option but to use front steadies as described to unhitch caravan. As you say, bad for the caravan frame but better than putting his back out lifting front of 'van, so a reasonable choice given the circumstances. I hope this clears up the mystery for you..

a) The jockey wheel grounded whilst towing, so the guy removed it and may have accidentally left it at home
b) They didn't hitch up right and the caravan fell off the back of the car, thereby smashing the jockey wheel. I've seen that happen twice. (And it wasn't me by the way.)
Wouldn't you think that some kindly soul would have lifted the caravan off the tow ball, held onto the A frame whilst the owner checked levels, (lowering and raising the A frame under instruction till it was level front to back) and then, after the front corner steadies were down go off and find a log to stick under the hitch head?
