I think if the grey plug is connected and the master switch on your control panel in the van is on it should be charging. I dont know of anything that would show it charging whilst driving. Is there an ampmeter on the control panel to show the charge in the battery? If the battery is flat before you set off it will require a charge assuming it's not duff as I think a van charger just trickle charges and tops up your leisure battery.
