Looking after your Leisure Battery

a caravan charger will only maintain to 13.5 volts,a charge from a car charger does them good from time to time.this means removal and doing it off the van.

Hi Jeff,

I've never really got my head around all the techie stuff with batteries and charge voltage required. What I've been told several times from different sources is that you should really use a charger specifically designed for leisure batteries for your caravan battery. It's something to do with some chargers, such as the units fitted into a lot of caravans, only charging up to 13.5v whereas the batteries really need a staged boost up to over 14v.

As well as the built in charger on my van I do have another charger specifically designed for leisure batteries which gives this extra boost. In the past I have taken my battery from the caravan and tried to give it the "full" charge as others have recommended ,only to find the separate leisure charger registers it as already being fully charged. According to sources this should not be the case as the built in caravan charger does not have the power to fully charge the battery.

So in short, yes you should use a special leisure battery charger, but...... does it really make a difference??? Hopefully some one will come along soon that knows the answer.

By the way, how is life in the thriving metropolis that is Wishaw? Used to frequent there many years ago with friends in pubs no longer in existence e.g. The Stag Bar!
