Thinking of swapping my v6 vectra for a discovery hoping it will be better for towing and fuel comsumption, although the vectra tows no problem it uses quite a bit of fuel and we also had to get towed on to a site in wales as we got stuck in the snow! We are a bit concerned about reliability of the discovery as we saw 2 broken down on a trip to wales at the weekend. Has anybody any comments on the discovery ie: towing, fuel, reliability. ( van is avondale grampian and 17" long) cheers all.
Quillie, Disco will tow a 17 inch long caravan no probs!
There have been a few concerns over reliability of the Discos but I've had mine for quite a while now with no problems. It is a very good tow vehicle and you will not get stuck anymore, but they are quite thirsty when towing. I reckon I get about 20 to the gallon when I'm towing.

Buy an Estate, for the miles you will be towing per year the solo mpg isn't worth it. There's an old analogy about Disco's:-
The Japanese were testing their 4x4 for air-tightness, so they put a cat in overnight, in the morning the cat had suffocated, The team from the Disco did the same and in the morning the cat had gone.
You could buy a Jap Crap and regret it forever thinking you should of bought the best to start with Land Rover Discovery the best towing machine bar none!
P.S. don't listern to the Fool as hes on medication

I recently had a simular dilema, test drove a few of 4x4 s including td5 disco, was not happy with the ride & MPG was about 25mpg without van on the back, hence we ended up with an diesel estate which could pull side of an house off. We now get 32/34 mpg when towing and 47mpg when not.
Try a test drive in couple of diesel estates im sure you would be impressed.
big al tell us your mpg figurs for your jap cr+p then?
my disco would pull you your jap cr+p and caravan out of a muddy field no props low range at diff lock. towing 56mph 28mpg mitsesy wont do that not towing? rust whats that?
mines waxoild from new now 12 years old no rust on it at all, most panals ally any ways and i can legally pull more than you 3500kg.not bad for a first post on this site.
hi every one
cheers chris
I LOVE my Disco and no amount of self-righteous ranting will change my mind. So the mpg when towing is not wonderful, but do you really think I care? As for looks - if we all liked the same thing in a vehicle, there would be one vehicle manufacturer building one model and it would be a b*gger of a job finding yours in the car-park!! I like the way my Disco looks and seriously dislike ugly Mitsy-whotsits (prefer a car I can spell, anyway!), but that is MY opinion, and I am fully entitled to it.
Quillie - if you fancy a Disco, I seriously suggest you test drive a few - you will find the ride and handling SOOOOO different to a 'normal' car that you may find you actually don't like it (I love it, but each to their own). A TD5 sounds like a tractor (especially when cold), but it's got a fair amount of grunt and will pull your caravan with no difficulties at all (ours in 23 foot and 1500kgs - no probs). The mpg is not fanastic, but what you class as acceptable is unique to you, so I'm not going to comment further (can't give you a figure anyway - I don't work it out, just 'feed' George Disco when he's hungry!!). It's true that diesel estates will give you better fuel consumption, but if you go in for all-year caravanning and going to rallies rather than 'all bells and whistles' sites with good roads and hard standing, a (decent) 4x4 beats a car hands down in the 'get off the field' competition!!!
Don't let anybody sway your decision Quillie - it's your decision and you will have to live whatever vehicle you buy.
