Good morning all - hopefully another beautiful sunny day ahead. Our breakdown cover is due for renewal and I would welcome your comments and advice as to whether we should stay with the AA or venture a new membership with Green Flag. We have been with the AA for many years and, as you can imagine, we feel a little nervous about changing (or is it just me??!!) We have obviously looked at and compared the services provided by both organisations and, as far as I can see, they look to be very similar except for the price - the AA being approximately £70 more! Hubby is the sort of person who thinks "stay with what you know" but I, on the other hand, think about the finances whilst also trying not to compromise on service and quality. I would really appreciate your comments as I need to make a decision within the next week. Many thanks - Jenny
If you have a caravan and want full caravan cover then you basically have two choices
RAC Arrival - available through Camping and Caravanning Club
Mayday - available through Caravan Club.
Please do not make the mistake of thinking that these schemes are the same as run by the breakdown companies that operate them (RAC and Greenflag). Both schemes have additional features that you may need for your caravan and that you won't get from standard RAC or Greenflag cover

GEM offer the same as AA, RAC, Greenflag, i.e. caravan must be attached to car and on a road.
Arrival and Mayday will recover your caravan or car from a campsite, will transport your car and caravan to your holiday destination and then transport both to your home if the repair can't be fixed while you are away which are definitely not available from GEM, AA, RAC or Greenflag

Mayday, through the Caravan Club is my prefered choice. They will recover any size caravan (I believe RAC & AA have restrictions) and you get 'double journey' cover when towing the van to a site that you've previously booked. They are less expensive and you get more for your money.
Just another thought, Mayday and Arrival will cover your caravan as well i.e if you have a puncture on it or it gets damaged and needs to be recovered. The basic RAC and AA will only cover the towing car and not problems with the caravan.

Ahh, now that's a good point - hadn't realised that and just confirmed it with the AA. My renewal is also due but just signed up with Mayday - many thanks

Not the bold print - you are only covered while the caravan is attached to your vehicle! Plus you have a restriction on length.
Neither the C&CC or CC have these restrictions which is why they are the best for caravanners

Had to call them out last month to change a wheel and they arrived in 25 minutes.
My membership costs me just over £80.00 a year and I get roadside assistance, recovery and home start. On average I think this is about £60.00 less than the AA and RAC for the same level of cover.
The only difference I can see is that the AA and RAC cover YOU whereas Mayday cover the vehicle.
We were with the AA but changed to Green Flag when we renewed our car insurance with Direct LIne. We pay about half what did with the AA and we are both covered for our two cars and also when in another car. Our daughter is also covered when driving my husbands car.
Glad of it when we broke down coming home from holiday and had to be brought home from just outside Inverness. Caravan taken back to storage and us, two dogs and car brought home. Couldnt fault the service we got, friendly and efficient.

Our AA renewal was about the same price as Mayday (£90) but has the limitations mentioned before. Also, my Mayday policy does cover me and the wife in ANY vehicle (including my motorbike) - cost an extra £7 to do that
