We have some walkie talkie to keep in contact with the kids whist on site but they find them difficult to use. They are only cheap one from Tesco's but they cannot seam to hold the talk button in enough to be heard (it is to tough to press down for any lenght of time). Can anyone recommend some that are easy for a 5 and 8 year old to use, and not too expensive. I need at least 3 so they can have one each.
We toyed with this a few times. In the end we went for PAYG mobile phones. I hated the idea of giving a mobile to a 7 and 10 year old, but they proved more reliable, practical enough to slip in their pockets and therefore less likely to get put down and lost and have the advantage that they could call not only us, but in an emergency the police, ambulance etc. We got them in Asda for £10 with £10 credit on.
You can limit the numbers that they can call with them, but that for me wasn't the main issue with them. Walkie Talkies use radio waves, albeit at different frequencies to mobile phones, so as regards the safety element I am not convinced a walkie talkie is any better than a mobile phone, just socially more acceptable.
Realistically, no one really understands the effects of any of the electromagnetic radiation caused by the radio waves of mobile phones or walkie talkies. Mobile phones contribute to a relatively small ammount of electromagnetic radiation. The bulk of it occurs naturally.
Had walkie talkies a couple of years ago. Reason that not used now was the foul language that comes over them. I don't know why but even with umpteen channels we were still finding them being misused on all channels. Not suitable for kids unless the times have changed.
We got a quad pack from Maplin's last year before we went to France. They were about £80-90, you could set the channel and the kids were able to use them, they were aged 4 and 7 at the time. Never had a problem with them.

We got a pack of binatone ones from Currys last year while on hols. They are bright yellow and black, my son is 8 and had no problems using them last year. There are a few different channels you can choose from (if you can find the instructions on how to do it!)
We had a pack of Tesco ones and they were rubbish.

Hi, Vodafone do a family and friends thing, on pay as you go, as long as the initial Vodafone user keeps a top up of £5 a month they get thier number and 3 other numbers (vodafone)registered on Family/Friends and any of the 4 can call each other for up to 1hour at no cost as long as there is credit of £5, the kids would not need credit in thier phone.I think they still do that deal, as I still use it. hope thats of help.

p.s we had some for on site and never had any problem with rude words etc, PAYG phones wouldn't be the same for kiddies play at all, ours cycled about playing hide and seek with them etc which wouldn't work with phones.

We have them for our Grandaughters when they are with us. Got 2 from B&Q a couple of years ago and they work fine. Several channels to choose from and easy to operate.
