I have a friend who has reached the wonderful age of 70yrs. Before he wrote off to DVLA he was going to ring me but didn't, (much to his other halfs now annoyance)
Anyway, to cut a long story my mate forwarded his licence to Swansea and it came back quicker than a speeding bullet limiting him to 3500kgs which is a problem.
His wife thinks it highly amusing that he should now display L plates and be supervised by the lady who has never towed in her life.
This is where you lot come in. He/They know that in order to get his 'rights' back it will be necessary to have a medical but other than that, he and me have no idea as to the protocols involved.
Is there anyone out there who has been through this.
I would like to think that he can go for a medical, send off (hopefully a good result) to Swansea and he gets his full entitlement back.
We both hope that, in sending his licence he hasn't lost his entitlements without going through a test.
Any help would greatly appreciated.
------------- How come when some people visit the fountain of knowledge, they only gargle!!!
As usual, I will stand to be corrected, but I believe I have read elsewhere of this happening.
I understand you do not lose your entitlements, only that the DVLA are not automatically carrying them forward onto the new licences (but not in all cases).
There have been instances where people have sent their licence off and it has come back with certain `groups` missing (i.e entitlement to ride a motorbike, for one), and obviously if you are stopped by plod and you are not in posession of a valid licence for the type of vehicle you are driving/riding/towing you are commiting an offence.
It is therefore imperative to check carefully when the document is returned, and if isn`t correct send it back and demand it is put right.
Your friend shouldn`t have to undergo a medical to get his/her licence back with the same classes that it went in with. This doesn`t apply to LGV/PCV licences.
If the medical is the same as the HGV medical, you just get it done at your local GP surgery. Not covered by NHS so cost about £90. It involves blood pressure/heart rate test & sight test.
I was reading the op as if the letter stated a medical was required to reinstate the full entitlement. Did your friend declare any disabilities when he renewed?
If the licence came back with no explanation of why the entitlement has been removed it could well be as Angus said, that the entitlement has been accidently left off as this has happened before. It has been in the news.
The DVLA are ntorious for doing this. The only ones I know of who have them reinstated without a fuss are the ones that took a photocopy of their licence before they sent it back.
You have to have a medical to retain your licence to drive anything over 3500kg after you turn 70 this will allow you to drive vechicles up to 7500kg, i don,t know wether you can get this form from the post office or if you have send to the DVLA, but once you get the form & you pass the medical, send the form and your licence and you should get the upgrade no problems.
PS go on to the DVLA WEBSITE and it will tell you which form you require.
There have been countless examples where people with full motorbike licenses have had that bit left off when they renewed or changed address etc. It has all been clerical errors.
Contact them and see whats going on.
I have just done the same thing,it is not a mistake,at 70 to retain your entitlement you are required to have a medical from your doctor and send it off with your renewal form otherwise it will come back without it.
The good news is if you ring the DVLA they will send you the form by return and provided you have the medical it will take less than 3 weeks to get it reinstated.
The cost of my medical was £85.

The license lasts for 3 years and I assume the medical is the same.
A point to note is, although the renewal form may say your existing photo is O.K. and you dont need to send a new one, if your existing photo is 10 years old before the expiry of your renewed 3year post 70 one they only date your license up to the photo expiry date,so it pays to send a new photo.
