I have a cascade 2 water heater which i picked up off ebay.  It is the heater unit only, with 2 water ports, a gas inlet and a short length of cable which has been hacked.  Searches on this forum suggest a cable teminated by a 5 pin din A connector - I guess this is the first few inches of that cable.

I wish to use the heater with as fuel regulated propane - I live off the grid and generate enough electricity daily to tun a low power light bulb and TV for about an hour so certainly would not want to use it to heat water.

So - my question is, can anybody please advise how i can wire this baby to get it to work, using discrete components?

Many thanks in advance.

There should be a controller at the end of the 5 core cable. This will use 12volts to ignite the gas and operate it safetly. It will have some little LED indicators to indicate things like low water pressure, low gas, gas lit etc.

Thanks for the quick reply, I am grateful.

I gathered there should be a cotroller at the end of the cable, but there isn't.  What I am really looking for is the infomation to replace the missing controller using discrete components.   Does anybody know the function of the wires in the cable, and their colour identification, please?  I don't need an indicator to tell me I am running out of gas, nor do I need one to tell me I am running out of water.  I should like to control the timing of the ignition myself, however I appreciate the need to extinguisg the burn automatically upon fault conditions.  Is this feature acheived within the unit I have, or is it a function of the absent controller?

Many thanks in advance.

'one of these' is the later one and does not have some of the functions of the correct control switch, ie, the power supply moved to the main control at the module, plus of course it connects up with a different loom.

Depending on the exact burner module fitted, you only need a rocker switch and three LED's to show function, green for power, red for fail and lock out, and yellow for low voltage, the control for this last one is on later post 94 module boards with duel DIN/Molex connections, I think it's also on the last of the DIN only modules from mid 93.
Power signal is direct from the 12v feed and red in all cases is a signal back from the module.

To distinguish the possible earlier module that might be suitable, apart from single DIN connection, it won't have a red knob to adjust the temperature.

To be honest though, why mess about, there are plenty of earlier control switches on ebay, the DIN lead you can get off the shelf in Maplins!

Thanks Gary.

To answer the perfectly reasonable "why mess about" question, it is really an issue of accessibility of parts.  The caravan is in a very remote portion of Spain, I live there for several months of the year.  Unless I arrive there with exactly all the items I need and all the information required to overcome unforseen problems, I am screwed.  I once spent a complete day trying to find some glasspaper - unsuccesfuly - and any grade would have been acceptable :-)  So, if I can get a control and lead in the few days before I fly out to Spain again I certainly shall, but it would be great also to have a bag with a rocker switch and some leds in, together with an understnding of what's what.

To that end, please could somebody advise the colours and functions of the 5 wires? :-)

Thanks!
