So, I finally ordered a new battery for the caravan and it fits. I may have measured a little bit wrong but it fits! Just!!! The clips fit and sit on the terminals but their is about 3mm clearance ie, between the top of the terminals and the plastic battery box. Is this OK.?
A friend has just told me that they had a fire due to the battery being to tight.......now I am panicked!!!
It's a leisure battery in the battery box fitted to the caravan.
Many of us have batteries that 'only just' fit the battery locker.
Your friend had a fire because either the battery and/or charger and/or cabling were faulty! - NOT the fit in the battery box!!! Only caveat on that is that cables should not be compressed or pinched together by the tight fit to the point that insulation may become compromised - don't forget to allow for when the door is closed.
In normal use/conditions, batteries may get SLIGHTLY warm on charge, but not so hot that they require significant ventilation space to cool them! If they are HOT, something is VERY wrong!
And no, it's not a stupid question, it's a very valid question if you have concerns, and others mislead you into worrying.

Sometimes those quick release battery clamps can make a battery tight to fit, I use the quick release type that are side fasteners because of it.
They look useful, but possibly only for batteries with posts protruding above the casing top.
My battery has the posts in recesses and not protruding above top, and even the normal bolt tightening clamps were awkward to get a spanner on, swapped them for the toolless flip down top type clamp, but do need to release the battery securing strap and pull it forward a little to be able to release the clamps as insufficient head room in locker to do so!
