This may be obvious to some and may raise a chuckle, but could some plese advise?

We want to go out in the van this winter and i'd really like to try a site that has hard standing, but i don't want to appear dense when i get there!

If we want to erect the awning, does this go on the hard standing, or does the caravan go on the hard standing?  Or is the space usually sufficient fo both?

it depends on the site its self, but normally you park on the hard standing.

We have stayed on a number of hardstanding, and they have all been different

Tarmac for the car and caravan with the awning on grass

Hardcore (like stones) for car, caravan and awning.

Block Paving for car, caravan and awning

Shingle for car/caravan and grass for awning

Sites all seem to have various types of hardstanding, i would say that its best to take some rock pegs, these you use if yer awning is on the hardstanding itself

For us the purpose of having a hard standing pitch is not to have the problem of pitching/parking on grass. We had enough wet camping pitches on grass when we had the tent and had no option but to pitch on grass. We usually use CC sites where (up to now) the piches have been big enough to put caravan, awning and car on the hard standing.

Yep if CC site you put the whole lot on the hardstanding. Some sites pitches maybe are not wide enough for car/van/awning alongside each other, sometimes car across front. But generally if it's a gravel standing then the awning is sited on it too.

Why put up an awning as when you take it down it will be wet and then you have the hassle of drying it? If you really want an awning buy one of those cheapie polyester ones.

Where we often go, the hard standing is only big enough for the caravan. My wife insists we put the caravan on it so the awning and car go on the grass/mud. As far as I can see the caravan is the last thing that should go on the hardstanding.

Not sure if the awning or car should go on hardstanding. Both will get muddy.

We go away at Easter, Summer, October half term and xmas/new year! We have been lucky with taking the awning down the day before we leave a site!

We aim to do this too, but we adopt a flexible approach to try and ensure we take down the awning in the driest state possible.
