Sorry yet another question from me!

After discovering Shirley is a 1994 van and not a 1990 i now know i need to call CRIS to tell them im the new owner - if she is CRIS registered.

Are all vans that were made from 1992 automatically registered or is it dependant on whether the owner registered it?

Hope that makes sense.

Monica

If the previous owner hadn't registered it, I wouldn't bother, you might open a can of worms. Supposing if it comes up as stolen 12yrs ago?

Sorry but isn't not registering it the wrong thing to do and defeats the point and protection of the CRIS scheme or am I missing something?

Well if it was nicked 12 yrs ago then whoever it belonged to prob has a new van!! but you could stand to loose it due to insurance losses etc, so who is it protecting then? I'd keep schtum and not bother personally, but each to their own.

If a new owner does try to re-register and the van is then flagged as stolen, what is the proceedure?

There was a thread about this sometime ago, somebody did exactly as you are proposing, it came up as stolen yrs ago & according to him had to either settle up with the insurance co or lose the van, I cant remember which, perhaps somebody can find the thread.

There dont seem any point in CRIS reg'ing it, thieves steal new caravans, not 15yr old ones, like I said, Can'o worms.

What you are missing is why create possible trouble for yourself? Its pointless CRIS registering a 15yr old 'van nobody will steal it & it risks coming up as stolen. Which highlghts the failing of CRIS. Its not compulsory & its a a commercial organization. It exists first to make money, not protect the caravan owning public.

& until caravans(which cost as much as cars)are registered with the DVLA the same as cars. nowt will change.

Went through this last year;

A new van turned up on the site where I keep mine, it was also the same van as mine albeit a year older and that's where I got involved.

The owner asked me to date it for him so he could insure it, I knew it was 94-5 but no Cris numbers on the windows? eventually found the VIN number on the Chassis which had been tampered with. The last digit was a '5' but had been altered to look like an '8'

Anyway as soon as he tried to insure it, it came up as 'flagged' because the theft was recent, the previous owners he told me had had it a couple of years but it turned out to have been stolen a couple of months before he bought it!!

Police were involved and did all the local enquires proving, somehow? the previous owner and who sold it them were not involved in the theft and the trail was cold after that.

This left the guy to negotiate with the insurance company to keep it, they got as he put it 'stroppy' so he contacted the Caravan Club to sort it out. Upshot being, the Insurance accepted £50 and called it quits!!

He's now the proud owner of a legit van which is insurable!! the point being you have to give the VIN number to get it insured! Alternately you can 'keep stum' don't insure it and panic every time someone gets to close for a look!!

If as you say it's advertised as a 90 and turning out to be 94 means it quite likely is stolen, however, how do you know it's 94? as you say it's not Cris marked? I'm trying to think when they stopped making them, I thought they finished before 94?

So if I understand right the suggestion was not to bother with CRIS reg as it might be a former stolen one, but if this is the case you can't insure it anyway. Plus aren’t you helping people who steel in the first place if vans if you do not CRIS register and use the system – I know its not compulsory but its better than nothing and any thing we can do to make it harder for thieves the better.

Therfor isn't better to check out CRIS before buying it?

Also I think CRIS reg from 1992 applies to UK manufactured vans?

The advice being offered is specific to the op. He didn't check with CRIS before he bought it, presumabley because as a new caravanner he knew nowt about CRIS, which proves how useless CRIS is.

He has now paid his money & I am advising him as to the best way not to lose it. Theres no legal requirement to insure a caravan, anyway.

If you don’t insure it and it gets stolen or badly damaged and rendered unusable isn't that as bad if not worse than finding out that it might have been stolen (It may not have). Given the example quoted by Gary they might well be able to buy the van for a nominal rate.

Also if bought from a dealer don't you have any come back if the van has previously been stolen?

At the end of the day we may all have different views and that makes life more interesting, and gives people a choice of options.

Question ? would it just be better when buying a new van to phone a insurance company and give them Chassis Number and that would save you the costof checking the CRiS number. And if it was not a CRiS reg van then you would be ok anyway

ok heres how i found out my sprite XL is a 94 van - I went to the dealers yesterday and asked for the chassis number which didnt look to have been tampered with in anyway. Last night i attempted to purchase caravan insurance and it was telling me that the year of the van (1990) was not matching the chassis number. When i did a bit of investigating i discovered on a Swift message board how to determine the year of the van from the chassis number. I entered the details of the chassis number and altered the year in my quote to 1994 and it went through fine. I called the caravan club this morning and they told me that it was in fact a 1994 van as far as they could tell and stated that they would not have allowed the insurance to be processed if it was stolen etc.

They said the likely thing is that the dealer was uncertain of the year of manufacture and its nothing to worry about. So im relieved.

Thanks all for your help and information im sorry to have opened up a can of worms.

Monica
