Hello,

I need some toilet advice and hope you can help.

We have a manual flush Thetford toilet, and every time I flush it, black bits come out with the pink 'flush' fluid. It almost looks like very small pieces of black rubber - could it be the seal?

Also how do people clean the toilet bowl - I have seen some 'green' fluid that I think is used in a similar way to 'toilet duck' but I'm not completely sure.

Apologies for being a bit toilet obsessed - as the caravan was second hand I am never completely convinced that the toilet is clean enough. I think it's a girl thing.

Many thanks

Yvone

You can usually get this problem with a used van if it has not been 'lived in' for quite a while. It is a build up of bactreial fungus which can germinate around the inner edges of the toilet bowl and inside the flushing tank. (Yes it does look a bit like deposits from a rubber seal)  It may take a while to remove these deopsits using a mild detergent.Keep flushing the toilet through till it breaks it all up. It should clear up eventually...we had a similar problem with ours but it is OK now....As for cleaning the toilet bowl you can buy all sorts of cleaning fluids from dealers which will do the job quite well....

Hi,

We had tis when we bough our van, it had been sat at the dealers a while with the flush tank filled, I presumed it was some sort of algy/growth,  It soon cleared after a couple of tank fulls being flushed.

Saying that i have by mistake put some toilet blue in the flush tank and that melted the seals into a brown sticky gloop.

Thetford do a flush tank cleaner which will loosen it and after a few tank refills it will clear. Once I have left the cleaner in place and pumped it away I tend to fill the tank with warmish water, not boiling hot, and find that quite successful.

Also "Fenwicks" do a product called "Top & Tail" which you add to both flush and holding tank and does clear this up after a period of usage, although it looks unsightly it will normally disappear after a while.

 Thank you,

I never realised how steep a learning curve caravanning is - it's a good job this forum is around ,your advice has been really useful and we'll give it a go next weekend.

Happy Easter!

A solution of Milton and water in the rinse tank left for 20 minutes before being flushed through should get rid of the black bits.
