I got my trailer tent out yesteday ready to trade in for the new caravan, thought i would make sure it was well after the winter in the garage. When i opened it up the smell of canvas was fantastic, i even got the sunday paper a couple of cushions and laid down and read for an hour. I hope our new caravan has a distinct smell that reminds me of holidays.

Why do you only get that smell when you open up the caravan from being stored/unused?
Once you have it in use, you can return to your closed-up caravan having been out all day - no smell! Put it away after use and the next time you open the door - the lovely caravan smell is back.
So where does the smell go when you are on holiday eh???

Claire - how funny you should post about the 'caravan smell'. Both of us love the smell in our van - and the strange thing is that the current one smells exactly like the old one! My youngest son helped me take some stuff up to the van a week or two ago, and he also commented about the smell reminding him of holidays.
I don't agree, though, that you can't smell it whilst you're away. We can - especially if we've been out for the whole day. It's a sort of warm, cosy, sweet smell. Mr Val A now butts in, cynically, and says - 'Perhaps what we're all smelling is just the blue or pink toilet fluid!!!!'. I like to think not!
Our van has a unique smell too.. Can't put my finger on it, but it is only 2 year old and I still think there is a newness smell about it and wood. I love to go out on a sunday afternoon and have a cup of tea in the van, especially if the sun is shining in. The neighbours must them we're mad, but only another caravanner would understand!

Claire - I know what you mean our caravan has a lovely caravanny sort of smell too especially when we first go in it after it has been in storage for a while. The smell soon disappears after hubby gets in though!!
