I'm currently on site, and just gone to turn the gas on. It's a red propane bottle and when I opened it( unscrewed the valve), there's a hissing noise coming out of it.
I've turned it off now.
What's the problem with it?
If there is a warden on site, ask them to have a look at it. Failing that, take it to a place to exchange it and ask them to inspect it.
I wouldn't risk leaving it as it is.
Have you tried brushing on some soapy water around the area you think the leak originated?
If there’s a leak it should be easily located and there should be a distinctive smell of LPG.
I’ve never listened at the valve when an appliance is switched on, but perhaps an appliance - cooker/oven/heater/fridge is “on” and you are hearing gas passing through?
You haven't stated whether it's a loud or quiet hiss or that you even have a gas hose connected to the gas cylinder in which case it WILL give out a hiss if you just open the valve without anything connected it which sounds very much like in your posting information. A bit more info may help to detect the problem.
Hi,
Everything is connected, just needed to open the valve on top of the cylinder. When you undo the valve it's a loud hissing noise which goes away when the valve is turned off
Everything was fine last time we used the van
Sounds very much like a defective shut off valve then at the top of the gas cylinder. I would return it to a dealer as soon as possible for a replacement as it is dangerous and not fit for purpose.
Why was it turned off? As you say you are going home tomorrow I guess you have been on the site and using gas before this morning.
Have you checked that the pipe is screwed tightly into the cylinder? With red bottles there is not normally a rubber washer but the connection is gas tight if it is tight, some need a spanner but newer ones are tightened by hand.
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.
The lightweight 6kg calor gas bottle certainly do have a rubber washer. It is cone shaped and attached to the gas pipe connection. If you lose this there is no seal and gas will escape.I know because it happened to me

I use the standard red propane bottles and they don't have a washer, I did not realise that other red bottles do have them. It is good to learn.

A few years ago I swapped from the standard nut connection (where you have to use an open ended spanner) to a handwheel type because not is it only more convenient not needing a spanner but the domed nozzle is rubber rather than Brass so you are guaranteed a 100% seal every time. No more worries about gas leaks coming directly from the connection thread which I think is much safer.
I have switched to the FloGas light ( fibre glass ) bottles due to the balls up with the calories lites....Very impressed although I have to use a 27mm clip on regulator and would have preferred a shut off valve type regulator
