Any pole is strong in compression, i.e. pressing down from end-to-end. Any pole will deform if bent from the middle (except carbon would more likely snap).
Alan29 is dead right: secure your awning well, including storm straps, and you should be ok with either. Aluminium though is significantly weaker than either, so avoid this option.
