I have just bought a vodafone dongle on pay as you go just like the phones as we didn't want to be tied into a set payment each month as have wireless at home an its only to use in the vanwhen we are away. Haven't tried it yet but hopefully it will be o.k
Using any UK based dongle overseas will give you a bit of a sting - you'll need to check your carriers rates, but I have read of very hefty roaming charges. DO NOT confuse the recent drop of roaming charges to include mobile broadband, it's for voice roaming only.
I've tried all the main PAYG dongles and found they all have their own pro's and con's; coverage, varying services etc. If it's only something you want to try though, you might be interested in this site here where you can get a free 3 dongle for the price of P&P - don't have much to loose if no good. The firm is genuine, they're acting agents for 3 (in law just received one from them).
