my sons used to have their own car valeting business and always used washing machine conditioner as a freshener either spray it on with a fine mist sprayer or use it in a machine cleaner
I would use bicarb, I've used it before on carpets. I have two dogs and always use fleece throws on the upholstery. In fact they have throws on their own sofa at home, which are washed every week. I can recommend the fleece throws from Primark. Good value for money and they wash nicely.
Anyone that has a dog and wants to get rid of doggy smells, please do not use 'SHAKE AND VAC' on any upholstery, it can bring your dog out in a rash.
