Firstly, if you use lights that have a standard bulb similar to what are used in cars then these will consume more power rather than the flourescent type lighting which will drain the leisure battery quite quickly. However, this only applies if you are not on electric hook up and relying solely on 12 volt power. If you are connected to an electrical supply then this is not an issue. As I attend many rallies throughout the year I often rely on 12 volt power so I have to be careful what sort of lighting I choose. In our full size awning we use a 12 volt flourescent strip light with 2 clips on the that clip on to the awning centre roof pole with a cable that has a 2 pin plug that plugs in to the 12 volt socket located inside the caravan that is connected to the 12 volt circuit. I feed the cable over the roof pole then through the caravan side window which is locked in place by the rubber seal and the rest is tucked behind the caravan seats out of view. I have used this method for many years and find sufficient for our needs but I also have another flourescent light with two crocodile clips that I can connect on to the car battery if I need to which I rarely use unless we have guests and maybe up till midnight having a chat and a drink. I do carry a generator with me if I am attending a rally for more than 3 nights though just to keep the leisure battery topped up with power.
