When a friend bought a transit MH that the previous owner had converted she had a lot of trouble getting insurance until she took it to a HGV servicing company and paid for an hours work to get them to write an engineers report on it describing the work done and noting its road worthiness.Maybe you could do something like this with your trailer.....got to be worth a go.If your local authority/council has its own in house workshops and/or MOT bay it may be worth approaching them to get it looked over and given a written report.Insurance companies love documents with stamps on!!!Good luck! And let us know how you get on - it could be a useful bit of info, maybe worth a sticky if admin agree.
Was wondering where said table could be accessed and where would i get a plate made? Can you add your own chassais number or id. noumber do you think?
Anyway im away in it today, hopfully all goes well and I willtry and sort it out when I ge back at the weekend. Thanks again :)
yes you could us your initials and a number. you can weigh it and call the gross wt 1.5times the weight. the plate can be a bit of aluminium .stamped with letter punches or engraved. . its really quite daft you have to do it but thats how it is. i build expedition trucks and trailers so do it all the time. its the getting ins. that could cause the problem .most dont bother as its so much hassle with homemades .you could get an engineers report if they ask. but it could be costly. all depends how much you value the caravan. it could be you have to get an independant valuatiopn again can be costly. you car ins, will cover it on the road .so is it worth bothering.
i have had mine so long now nobody insured them when i had it and its never been insured since.
Yeh, my car insurance covers it on the road the only reason I realy want to insure it is incase its get knicked or so badly damaged i cant use it agian, becasue ive no money to replace it.
Hi jo+h,dose your van have brakes that is opperated by the tow hitch when your apply car brakes, if so your max towing speed is 60mph on motorways, and duel carrigeways, and 50mph on single lane two way roads, even if the single two way road is 60mph, trailers, caravans, lorrys, buses are NOT allowed on third /forth lane of motorways exept when one or tow lanes closed, if your trailer is unbreked them your speed is 30mph max, think this speed is still the case. Have you had it weighed yet,or found the ID plate,or simmilar trailer, as for insurance,if insurance company want every thing legaly detailed, the only way forward maybe as vwallan and shocker said in thier posts.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
