you can do it with out contacting the dealer or the manufacturer . there should or may be a plate on the axle stipulating its max weight . the tyres have it moulded on them . the suspension is also usually marked or can be recognised as this or that. you take all this to dvla /vosa , usually dvla as its now a living van used privately. and they may wish to inspect the parts and verify the spec .then you can make a new sticker /plate if they agree with you. thats it. many use companies like sv tec as they have a great list of recognised alterations or specs / yes you pay them for the info. in the transport world its all big money but once you know on one you can apply it to the next one . so it does eventually become cheap. the rules are made for you to obey . safety and common sense may not play apart in it .but you must obey. thats the rules.

On some models the MTPLM is the lowest it could be and so the manufacturer can uplift the maximum weight to what the chassis/axel/wheels can actually take. They charge for the upgrade and maybe that's just a money making exercise. many manufacturers will not upgrade. If you just want to carry more gear in the van ask your manufacturer if it will upgrade or put more into the car (if you have space). It is harder to exceed the max laden weight of a car than  a caravan.
