We deduced that the orange squash was at fault as the only other things we had was toast and a cheese & tom sandwich + tea (this could have been a coincidence). I really thought that I had completely sterilised my system - the van is only a couple of years old and we had it from new so no inherited germs (if you know what I mean). I feel I didnt want to have a large bottle again because of my religious cleaning of the water and the fact that the bottle would take up too much room. But I just wanted to bring to your attention the possibilities of not taking precautions for what is very little cost about £7 - I hope you picked up on the fact that Milton can actually harm your system. Also what if you were one of the first families on site and it had only just opened for the season and you filled up with water that was months old. At least now you can throw a tablet in the aquaroll for peace of mind.

Hi tango55. Interesting to read your thread too. It seems as though it is similar, when I was younger I brewed beer and wine and used a chemical called sodium metbisulphide for sterlisation. But I dont think it is as good as puriclean. I noticed that the latest C&CC advert on page 4 of the mag shows that truma now have aquastar which must be similar

Hi Chalkie. I remember the Sodium Metabisulphide actually when I used to make home made wine and beer many years back but as time progresses so does the products. The later product that came on the market was Chempro SDP but it appears that this is no longer available or it has been replaced with another name. It has been about 15 years ago now since I last made any wine etc. but as I kept all my equipment I decided to make some for the 2011 rallies we will be attending.

This issue on Bio-film etc. should be paramount regarding health and safety because I reckon it's possible that a severe dose of unsterilised contaminated water could possibly lead to Legionnaires' disease if the appropriate bacterium was breeding in the water droplets. As this disease is a know killer, more accurate information should be provided stating the obvious facts that Milton should not be used in conjunction with caravan water systems due to a) not being inneffective at destroying Bio-film and  b) the fact that it can cause damage to caravan and motorhome water systems.

It makes me wonder how many campers, caravanners and motorhomers will now change to Puriclean in order to clean their water systems etc. as for the last 6 years of using Milton I for one will refrain from using it in the future. I already have my 400 gram tub of Puriclean ready for the strart of the season.

Good health !!

' We deduced that the orange squash was at fault as the only other things we had was toast and a cheese & tom sandwich + tea (this could have been a coincidence)'

In other words you are guessing it was the water.  It could just as likely been caused by a bug picked up from someone else.  Without testing the water for contaminants there is no proof.

Considering the water we are using is already millions of years old.......

We are happy with using Puriclean at the start of every long trip (twice a year) , use the water via the caravan taps for drinking etc, and in 13 years have had no problems.

I've been caravanning and camping for over 50 years and never had a Delhi belly when away but there is always next week and knowing my luck it will snow, the water will freeze and I will be sat on the bog with my head in the sink wondering if the gas will run out before I stop running out. Lets hope the Puriclean I used about 4 months ago did its job!

It always amazes me to see people laying submersible pumps on the ground while filling up their aquarolls and also using an old piece of hose to fill it with.

                   ___________________________________________________

I quite agree that laying the pump on the ground is subject to attracting germs, that's why I always use 2 barrels so the submersible pump goes directly into the reserve barrel immediately. The hose is probably the one item that gets left behind when sterilising equipment and I think that I may have been guilty myself on a couple of occassions purely on the grounds that I forgot. Well worth mentioning though as it just as important as sterilising the rest of the equipment.

I leave the pump in and fill the water hog from a jerry can. Just can't be bothered to unhitch it all and roll the Hog across the park......

Hi Phil, I know one or two caravanners that trek back and forth with a jerry can to replenish the water barrel but isn't that the reason why they designed the Aquaroll and Water Porter to avoid the unnecessary hassle of lifting and back breaking chores?

Hi brianconwy

I thinks you are missing the point here. I filled the aquaroll up and the pump and tank had slime deposits on it. This I would think would ring an alarm in most peoples head as it is not normal. Shortly after we developed a gippy tummy. But most of all why was my aquaroll slimey and what was the state of the pipes on the water system in the van. I needed to find out - if the slime on this occasion wasnt to blame was it safe in the future apparently not. From the information I was then given I decided to let other people know of these possible dangers. Thats all - but you seem to think I should be getting proof on why I got the gippy tummy in the first place - who cares now - I want stop the possibility in the future

Hi Tango 55 got a little trolley for the jerry can and the only lifting is to pour to fill the water hog. Don't mind that. Just prefer to keep the pump in the barrel all the time. We all have our own little foibles. Water for the van can be a risk (as seen above) so we take our own precautions. Does anyone wipe the spout at the drinking water pipe before they fill their hog? All sorts get around that!!! Another foible.... we use a dettol wipe to do that.

Phil

'Thats all - but you seem to think I should be getting proof on why I got the gippy tummy in the first place - who cares now - I want stop the possibility in the future.'

I once phoned environmental health convinced that some cooked poultry I had purchased had made me violently ill.  Of course I had associated the last thing I had eaten with the illness and ruled out other causes.  It may well have been the water and I ( and most people ) already take precautions by using puriclean.

Ok, so I've used Milton sterilizing tabs for a few years (without problems) but have now run out. So it seems the perfect time to buy the Puriclean instead, so where do I buy it from?

Just my own personal view about Milton having used it for sterilizing babies equipment.  I don't think it actually cleans - I always used hot soapy water to clean, rinsed, sterilized with Milton & then rinsed again in boiled water.

We haven't used our freecycled aquaroll yet but I have used Puriclean to get it ready,
