There must be a more positive way to attach a unit to a towing vehicle than the standard towball. I know there is as the pin and ring method which is used by some commercial vehicles but there are disadvantages as we know because you would have to fit a snakemaster or equivalent with it.. Until there are a few more serious accidents the best one is the one we've got now. at least the brakes should come on the unit if it detaches itself. If care is taken when attaching your unit as mentioned above and everything is in good condition we should be OK. Over the years I haven't seen any vans or trailers coming off a car and running down the road.

Towball & hitch is perfectly secure. Op's friend either had a faulty hitch, very unlikely, or didn't hitch up properly, very likely. He now knows the best method of checking hitch is coupled, which is the method most of us use, I would hope.
Ring and pin are OK but noisy.you wouldn't attach any kind of stabiliser though. I don't know of any professional that would use one.
Ball hitch is definitely secure. If you connect it right it stays on every time.
