How awful, really feel for you and hope your get sorted with insurance.  We always do the lift the car thingy and will be doing extra pull ups to make doubly sure now.

Just a thought, was the towball fitted the longer neck version designed for the Alko stabiliser?

From what I gather, the lack of articulation an Alko hitch has on a standard ball could prise it off.

I agree, that has happened to others. I always pull up the handle on our van to double check it is connected. The one time I didn't do it was on a field site in Ireland and we decided to move the van to another pitch. I connected it up and started to move. My wife started shouting that the van had become unhitched and as I hadn't wound the jockey wheel completely up was travelling towards the back of the car after I had stopped. The van stopped with inches to spare.

At the time I was totally convinced that I hitched it up correctly and would have argued black was white. I obviously had not done so as we have never had any more trouble because I double check everytime. I would venture to suggest that hitching up incorrectly or to the wrong sized ball was the problem in this case.

I am glad nobody was hurt.

First of all sorry to hear about your caravan. I've just invested in a new van (new to me) and it has the alco fitted. My to ball is the swan neck detachable so that seems ok. This thread has made me very aware of what to check ie the tow ball has to be completely dry and no paint, just bare metal. I always do the lift thing but it seems with alco it detaches when you are moving.
