Thanks Simon - I see how it's done now. I don't have a heavy frame on my awning though, its a drive-away and only has two fibreglass cross poles. It's pretty flexible in the wind, although I reckon I shall have to go for some kind of extra tie down kit. I'm visiting Kintyre in May and there are sometimes strong winds there, so best be safe than sorry! I reckon an extra tie down kit and that method of cross guying will hold everything down, hopefully!
Thanks all, we have bought a new awning today and a rachet system for the storm guys that attaches on the inside and comes down the front of the awning and then ridiculously long pegs everywhere!
Had my wee porch awning up at new year, 60+mph winds, I thought at one point the caravan was going to blow over. But the wee awning didnt move. I had it fixed down everywhere you could and guy ropes on i
Its just your luck, and a lot to do with what grip your pegs get in the ground. I use long heavy pegs, the ones that look like a long nail, with a welded cross section at the top. The ones that came with any awning i have bought are crap.
We're on a seasonal and season before last our awning blew down twice. Last year we added extra poles and storm straps with very long pegs which have a deep grove running the entire length and we had no movement at all. I'm a bit worried about this coming season though with the ground being so sodden and just hope that we have better weather than last year. We're going to the 'van tomorrow to check everything out so fingers crossed. The site owner is fantastic though and if there had been any problems he would have called.

Checked out the caravan and everything was perfect. This is the second winter with a cover and it was well worth the money.
Only problem was that on the way home got a puncture doing 75mph on the motorway 100yds from our exit - still at least it wasn't raining. Roll on March 2nd.
