Same reason you get 'silent' phone calls, these type of scammers, generally third world based, are putting out so many scam ads they can't keep up with them. A scammer will place these sort of ads by the 1000s, not just in the UK but in other countries so it might take a while for him to get back to the replies.
Its been removed off ebay....when we where looking for a caravan on Gumtree there was a van local and such a bargain 2010 at a bargain price of 6k !!!!!! I contacted the so called seller.....sent so many msges as no phone number was listed ...eventually got a txt msge that gave a google mail address ...and then got no answer from that...I eventually got in touch with gumtree saying i thought it was a scam...they looked into it and agreed.....and removed it...but i can understand people falling for it ..I thought i was getting a bargain..... but my sensible head over ruled !!!
