And if you use the M23 and A23 southbound, there are very long term roadworks at Handcross Hill (2 years of long term - joy!) with narrow lanes and 40mph average speed cameras

How very true thankfully we get off just before within 1/4 mile of it all at Handscross itself just allows us to get out of it. Tried it once Oh! dear never again.

I always check traffic flow on Trafficengland. Saves on stress at the beginning of a journey.

In answer to your question is there another oute. Well ys there is but is dependant on where you are and if you are worried about the M25. You could get yourself over to the A34 (Oxford to Winchester) head south join the M3 southbound and then M27 and turn left at Southampton heading towards Portsmouth and then A27. Long long way around but it keeps you off the M25. If it was me I would do the M25 and take lots of drink and food with you just incase you do get stuck in the traffic but can't remember when the last time that happened to me and in fact I get held up on the M6 near Stafford more then on the M25 and I use both far to much.

Yup - I have the joy every day to and from work and the s**s have just added more new cameras extending the 40mp zone even further now. What with the cones there and outside the back of the house I'm having "cone nightmares!"

Some parts are worse than others. There are roadworks on the Kent/Surrey section at the moment, with speed limited to 50mph and this will last until autumn 2014. The time of day you travel is important to avoid the worst queues and definitely try to avoid the Dartford crossing if possible, especially on Fridays. We try to travel at weekends to avoid the commuter traffic. It's not too bad to be honest and have had worse jams on other motorways. We have used it before on a Friday afternoon and had no problems, but it is pot luck. I've had busier scarier traffic around Birmingham!
