if you do get a cheap one which will do the job fine make sure you charge it often.. cheaper ones can have lesser quality battery cells which can self discharge quickly..
and freeatlast.. i just like fiddling with things.. i wanted a light weight winder.. a cheap winder i could leave in the van and one that would be not be flat every time i picked it up to use..
such a thing dosnt exist so i made one.. he he

Like your idea but how do you charge the lipo battery?
Do you use the charger that came with the drill or do you have have to by a special charger?

i have converted a couple of my drills to RC lipo batteries.. just take the old cells out and fit small RC batteries.. they dont self discharge and can be left stood for months and never go flat..
you do need a small RC charger to charge the batteries and be able to do a bit of soldering but the end result is well worth it.. more so for occasional use items..
my leg winder as been in the caravan since last summer i can just pick it up and use it and know it wont be flat.. it would also last a long time on a charge with normal caravan use..
self discharging is the biggest problem with metal hydride batteries.. okay for things in regular use but a pain for things that only get occasional use.. pick them up to use them and they are nearly always flat.. he he

Excellent hacking, Trog! I like the idea of having a drill in the 'van; wish I'd kept one of the many drills I've had where the battery went now. That's why I went for a cheap Bosch, knowing that I'd be likely to get another battery.
mod an old drill and the cost is very little.. i bought a new one for ten quid off ebay minus its battery..
buy a lithium powered drill and you get skanked.. tis a magic word that says at least triple the price of a normal drill
bought from the right places lithium batteries are quite cheap.. so is that little charger i linked to..
there are no snags but some soldering skill is needed.. most power tools can be cheaply converted this way..
you may have to buy some wire and small plugs.. deans plugs are the ones to use.. cheap and off ebay..
i do play with RC stuff so it all comes naturally to me..

if you have the old battery the lipo can be installed inside it.. just rip out the old cells and you have a nice empty box.. i didnt have is which is why mine is open and on the bottom.. the lipo battery is held in place with sticky backed velcro and a laggy band which isnt essential..
