My car is the same as Ewen c, when I come to a stop and release the foot brake it remains stationary and the break lights remain lit even though I have taken my foot from the break pedal. If at this point I hit the stop/start button to turn the engine off it will do so and the brakes remain engaged. So just because the brake lights are on does mean everyone is sat there with their feet on the break pedal. As for the point of the original post I completely agree if you don't have an auto hand break you should always shift to park and apply the hand break. I have read that its common in the US for people to just shift to park but I figured the brits we're not stupid enough do to that.

I tend to engage motor mover before unhitching from car as I have seen a caravan brake fail.

However I can see with my car it would be easy not to put the hand brake on hard enough, so once the caravan is disconnected it could roll off.

We tend to look at our own car, and most cars which are automatic have a park position which locks the transmission. However not all, I know the old mini did not have a park option.

I know my wife's car has automatic hand brake, however only driven her car once, I assume once the gear selector disappears into the centre consul, but don't know?

Last weekend went to Anglesey, and site entrance was tight, to point where wife got out to see if it was going to pass, which it did without needing to reverse, but going to the site, twice I needed to reverse, one to turn around, and once as gone wrong way on the site, no problem, however I can see how new drivers of trailer could have problems.

When I first jumped on a farm tractor at about 14 years old I did not have a clue on how to tow a trailer safely. The farmer took time to teach me as he didn't want tractor, trailer or gate ways damaged. However many caravan people have to learn the hard way.
