Hi Steve sorry and not to get into a debate............but if you haven't had a twin axle I  find it hard to see that you can comment on what they are like, we had a single and now have a twin and we love it, it is so easy to tow etc and no probs with siting it.

I keep well away from twin axles, I like to keep my caravanning easy. easy to manouver, can manhandle if needed. Easy to level, and on a sloping pitch back of van is not touching the floor. I can erect the awning alone. Been doing it for 19 years and won't change

Steve

Whats the difference leveling or putting an awning up on a single axle compared to a twin axle ? surely on a slope the distance from the rear of the axle to the back would be shorter so easier to level on a 18ft twin than the single? and as for an awning there would be no difference at all? just wondering?

You have had most of the pros and cons listed in these posts. I am on my third twin axle now and I don't see me going back to a single.  I like the space and stability when towing, but the main reason I choose the current one, was it had the layout I wanted for the budget I had.

You must be good at reversing because as has been pointed out they are virtually impossible to manoeuvre by hand (unless there is a lot of you).  You can push or pull them in a straight line easy enough but the minute you try to change direction it gets tough.  They do cost more to service - £20 or 30more?  There is of course another pair of tyres to replace when required.

Ours is 7.7m long and you can find some sites have limits which prevent you using the site - fine, we just pick another one.  If you get one, make sure you get an awning chucked in with it - they can cost quite a bit (£1000 for a new Isabella) and as mentioned earlier, putting a large awning up is really 2 person task.  Finally, you do tend to need a hefty towcar (but not necessarily a 4x4) but you seem to have that sorted anyway.

You can get some excellent vans both single or twin.  Personally, I would find the layout I wanted to fit my budget and then get it - single or twin.

I think as Steve pointed out it is all personal choice.  We have a single axle but would consider a twin if it suited us.  Our caravanning pals have a new Lunar twin axle and they have no problems with it....  I do like the idea of the stability of a twin axle even now I worry when lorries pass us that the caravan is going to snake.
