So let me get this straight..... If I buy a post sept 2005 caravan regardless of private or from a dealer I get a full bailey warranty transferred into my name. Can anyone explain why this is good? If its pre 2005 I only get whatever warranty is left at the dealership it was originally bought from or whatever the dealer I buy from directly is giving me.
Also, if I buy with a warranty thats not from a local dealer I have to take it back there everytime its serviced etc?
No, not quite. If you buy a post 2005 with transferred warranty (privately or from a dealer) you have full manufacturers protection against warrantied problems - for up to 6 years on some aspects. You do need to make sure that the original owner has maintained the warranty, by having the van serviced as required.
If it's pre 2005 you get no Bailey Warranty whatsoever as a second owner. You may get a dealer warranty - with whatever protection that offers.
With a Bailey Warranty, you can have your van serviced or warranty repairs carried out at any approved workshop - the only problem being that most dealerships prioritise customers who have bought new from them. So, whilst in theory you can go to any Bailey dealer, in practice you will find it hard to take it anywhere that doesn't feel beholden to you!
Its not impossible though. We bought a used Ace with transferred warranty and our local dealer happily serviced it for us and did some repairs under warranty (which I understand they make nothing on) even though it was supplied by a dealer at the other end of the country orginally.
Is this a brand new caravan? It could be judging by the asking price and age (6 months old).
If it is you might get the full 6 year warranty (and if second hand 5.5 years) but only if you pay to have it serviced annually as per the warranty agreement)
Even new I would expect to get £1k off the new price at the very minimum. By the sound of it you have no trade in and are buying a 1 year old caravan. What was the 2006 new price (I have it as £11,975 plus delivery = up to £405).
I reckon an offer of £10,250 might easily be accepted. This might be a high price if you keep it for only a short while. Devaluation in the first couple of years, like cars is horrendous. But if you keep it for 10 years it can be a bargain.
If its been on the forecourt for six months it will probably be a series 5 as the series 6 is now out, also if its been trampled through by all and sundry I'd offer at least 15-20% off the screen price, you can always go up in small steps or just walk away if they won't deal.By the way we love ours! The dealer knocked off the delivery charge and threw in a porch awning and a voucher for 10% off the 'essentials' from the leisure shop.
Ulti-mates thank you very very much for helping me understand (I'm not the sharpest tool in the box when it comes to these things and as this is my baby I have to arm myself with all the info to present to OH if I want him to be enthusiastic).
Tyreman, yes its brand new but has taken a bashing from being the demo on the forecourt. I'm thinking of keeping it until my boys dont fit the bunks anymore, they are currently 4 and 6 so maybe another 8 years or so and I'd consider trading in. If I got a good deal on it I'd feel like I'd avoided some of that initial loss on a new van. Thanks very much for helping re the amount to offer.
Mike & Judi, yes its a S5, If it feels right when I see it again and OH agrees I'll go in low to start with.
Spoke to the dealer this morning to see if anything else had come in. Turns out theres a 2005 bretagne on the way in next week as a part exchange. Hes going to call me when its ready to view. This may be better for us price wise so I'm going to wait and look at that first before trying to haggle hard on the demonstrator. Now all I need is for our share price to go up enough for OH to want to sell so we can pay for the thing! So many dependancies!
corrakid, they are US shares but certainly not healthy either. They were $19 in December and now they are $16.5 ish. We can sell some now at a push as some of them were options and bought quite low but we would sacrafice some bunce that could be made after the companys results come out at the end of the month when they should go up.
We have decided to both extend our credit card limits to get the van and then change our cards to a 0% interest one for 5/6 months to buy us some time. We are BIG motgage and card tarts! It helps when you have the funds but not quite mature enough, we then sell a few shares to clear the debt when their value is high.
Fingers crossed for next week we we can see the van - hope its the one!
If you have cash I wouldnt go near a dealer unless your looking for a finance deal, and if you are then definatley knock them down!!
If you do have cash I would buy private (as always) its much cheaper!! no overheads on top of the asking price etc..... but then you may lose out on warrantly etc.... negotiate for a regular service deal as well, try to create a win/win situation, but dont be pressured and agree to something your not sure of - walk away, you can malways go back after you have thought about it, its a big buy and you have to be happy with it!! :-)
and have fun!! its great
