You had to keep your thumb not wrapped round the handle or dire consequeces followed if the engine kicked back

My father-in-law was a garage owner.  He taught me to always swing the starting handle by pulling on the upstroke of its rotation.  That way, in the event of a kick, it just pulled your fingers open, and no painful thumb damage.

At least most 4 x 4s have a proper pare wheel except the top of the range 4 x 4s.  We were going to trad ein our S80 for a XC90 but when i found out it only had a space saver dropped the idea like hot potatoes.  Obviously this type of 4 x 4 will never survive off road.  Strange but even the new Minis do not have a spare tyre at all!

Well I have to say...I'm so glad that we had a spare wheel when we had a caravan tyre blowout on us while we were on our way home today

Hope all was ok?  I think this proves the point that spare wheels are a must.

My first caravan in 1667 had no spare wheel and I discovered a crack in the van tyre sidewall when making a toilet stop on the autobahn between Berlin and Helmstedt when it was forbidden to speak to an East German never mind stop

You had to sign that you had a spare wheel for the vehicle.a full tank of fuel and some tools but strangely the tight security didn't go as far as asking if a caravan spare was available

We had to continue to our destination which was in Denmark with crossed fingers and looking back we should have got a new tyre before continuing through West Germany

The van was propped up on wooden blocks on site for nearly a week before a new tyre arrived

I seem to remember buying a jack as well !!
