We were a bit iffy about having had to book a hardstanding pitch for our hols last year as our experience of them in the past hadn't been an overall pleasant thing BUT.......having tried one at Tregarton Park last year, we loved it! We booked another one for this year, (we're here as I type), and still use our BG and while this holiday has had more than it's fair share of wet stuff, (deluge more like), we've had no mud brought into the tin tent even with pooch and his soggy paws. By the time he's reached the tin tent the mud from the rest of the camp has pretty much been wiped off by the gravel on the hardstanding and the BG in the awning.

Have to say though if we'd been on Pentewan on a beach front pitch/premier pitch this soggy summer, we still wouldn't have put a tarp or anything similar down UNDER the BG as they're pretty strict about those pitches and only using BG on them. Would've hated to have been kicked off being found out of using clear polythene underneath. We only get one holiday each year and it's precious so we try to obey each sites rules.

We've often laughed at how the 'carpet' in the awning seems to need mowing when we've used our BG on grass pitches. Kinda love that grassy feeling underfoot though when it's sprung through the holes.

This said though, I reckon it's really up to each individual as to whether or not they want to flout site rules to ensure a drier more comfortable holiday or.......... not.

We had a week earlier this year at a site which doesn't allow ground sheets of any kind!! We usually use an inner tent (built in ground sheet) in the awning annex but decided to abide the site rules and sleep on air beds on the floor. No problem while it was dry - but then came the rain, followed by more rain! In the middle of the night we had to make an emergency dash into the caravan, then mess about (trying to be quiet!) making room for 5 in a 4 berth caravan. The water ran into the awning and puddled, everything was wet, beds, sleeping bags, kids books, toys, etc. etc.

Following morning the inner tent went up, I informed the site warden who asked if we could lift the tent on a couple of bricks in the morning. Seemed like an easy compromise, I just wish we'd been told we could do so at the time of booking instead of just the insistence of Sorry No Ground Sheets.

I did have a bg with my Dandy but hated it!!
