Petrol will remove the wax, but not damage the paint. There's nothing worse than old masking tape to remove as the glue goes hard and the paper gets brittle. We used to have a trick for removing it when I was in the motor trade, but I'll be buggered if I can remember what it was.
I have a vague recollection of using diesel somehow but there was more to it than just wiping with diesel. It'll keep me up all night now...
Petrol probably won't penetrate the glue very well as it will probably evaporate too quickly.
