Hi Drunk, I think you are very sensible.
Both Google Earth and Multi Map are ideal for checking your routes. Sometimes I seem to spend the same amount of time checking my route as I take to drive the dammed thing. 
The main thing is that your holiday trip should start from when you leave the house and not from when you arrive on a site. That means that your trip should be as relaxing and as pleasurable as possible.
