Then why not try to plan your day round dog friendly pubs/attractions/beaches?
If we are going out on a long walk and aim to have lunch somewhere, then I give the pub a quick call to check first.
As for "family things", I often take our dogs out alone, and its a great way to meet and chat with people I find. As for going into a pub "alone", this is 2010, many women go into pubs alone, even if its just for a coffee, its no big deal, I'm certainly not going to be put off doing something simply because I'm a woman. The days of pubs being a mans preserve went out years and years ago. Pubs are very different places now, and actively attract women visiting alone. Why not meet up with a girlfriend and go for a coffee if you are so worried about it?
National Trust locations are also Dog Friendly, and a great many of these have a cafe/restaurant where you can go with a dog, although the seating area may well be outside, as in the case of Fountains Abbey, but that isn't a problem.
Just a tip on National Trust, its much cheaper to join National Trust Scotland that England, and you are still entitled to visit all the English sites!
