Hubby put 1/4 of a tank of petrol in our diesel car on the way home from our big trip last year. We topped it up with diesel, drove the last 100 miles home with no weird noises and I spent the next two weeks topping the mix up as often as practical. Then I ran the thing nearly dry and filled up with diesel again. Doesn't seem to have caused any long term problems.
He couldn't even blame it on me because I was asleep at the time. I only woke up when he started jumping around yelling at himself.
