As I mentioned in an early reply, you can't use the detail from third party websites such as the popular (and sometimes inaccurate) 'Cuddles' kerbweight website, nor from the Dutch based Whattowcar.com that quotes euro spec weights.

As another example, the entire Focus range in the US has a maximum tow limit of 1000kgs! The weight your cousin needs is for the UK spec model of this car, which you need to obtain from (for example) vehicle handbook.

My apologies, but it seems you're looking for any justification that allows him to pull this van.

Oh yes, I really want my cousin to have an illegal and dangerous outfit!!!

Your assumption is wide of the mark.

I just want to have all the facts to hand before I ruin their dreams by pointing out that the car they have bought and the van they have ordered are incompatible; because if I'm going to be the bearer of bad tidings I want to be absolutely sure.

the facts are these

Parker's is a UK car database and shows their car to have a 1500 tow limit and a 1426 kerb weight,

The van has a MIRO of 1080 and a 305 maximum payload giving a MPTLM of 1385kg

And I will have a very sincere talk at the weekend about if this is a suitable tow car but please don't think I'm trying to justify this, i just want to make sure I'm 100% positive about the facts and not just relaying opinion.

If your figures are correct, when empty he will be towing at 76%. If he loads 200kg into the van (and that's quite a bit of kit) he will still only be at 89% which is perfectly do-able.

My apologies Chewie, I didn't intend to offend however reading ALL your posts clearly gave me the wrong impression. I was under the assumption too (as where most contributors I think) that the car was a petrol as you'd not specified until later. Although the 1.8 diesel does have a variant with 1500kgs towing limit, the stated weights still equate to a 97% match when loaded (albeit your cousin could restrict his weight) and while this is still 'doable', my opinion remains that this is too high a match for someone who (again I assume here from the context of the first post) is probably new to touring/towing.

Although not 'legally' or 'technically' wrong, the dealer provided, IMO, poor advice on this sale.
