I just priced up a commercial site for next weekend. Looked reasonable -(ish) at £18.50 for pitch and two adults but by the time I'd added electric, awning, kids and dogs it came to £41 a night.
I was underwhelmed when I'd read the reviews as apparently the toilet block is locked between 10pm and 7am but the price killed it
I also think that commercial sites insist on money up front maybe months in advance whereas a simple deposit should be enough which happens on club sites. I feel why have it in their bank when you can have it in your own.

Clearly those sites that are charging, what we consider to be, ridiculous rates, are not lying empty!
So whilst we may bitch about campsite prices, there would appear to be plenty of folks around who are only too willing to pay heafty charges and not quibble about them.
Small sites with basic facilities suit us fine when we are touring and the fact that they are often cheap is a bonus. However, occasionally we do like to "slum it" on a more expensive site and as long as the facilities match the price, then we will pay for it and enjoy our stay.
As I have said before, we are really lucky in this country with the numbers and choices of sites that we have and there must be hundreds of sites that are geared to everybodies individual tastes.
My Sis was gobsmacked when I told her how little it would cost for us to go to a C&CC site. She has always gone to commercial sites, the last one (in low season, in Wales) charged £25.50 per night.
I think that charge from the OP re the awning charge is high maybe because the site owner wants to discourage ppl from using awnings. Unless the owner is just truly greedy, for there can be no justification for charging that much for something that is on the same pitch, the pitch that you've already paid for.

I think it depends on what you're used to paying for a holiday too. My brother & his family always holidayed abroad until they bought a trailer tent and went camping with friends. I was surprised to find him paying £33 per night for a site and happily telling me how cheap it was. I guess as he was used to paying hundreds or even thousands for a holiday it might have seemed cheap to him but his wife was interested when I told her we try not to pay more than £20 per night. However, they preferred 5 * sites and were prepared to pay for them. (they've given up camping after only 2 years and are planning a cruise later this year)
£70 a night!! Cheaper to go bed and breakfast at that rate, but someone must be paying it or they wouldn't still be in business I suppose.
£4.50 a night for an awning does seem excessive but I have seen charges this high on commercial sites in Cornwall .... and didn't book them as a result.
The site owners try to justify charging for awnings saying it damages the grass and they have increased maintenance costs because of this. These are the same sites that accept tents onto their sites, with modern tents having "built it" groundsheets, which must also damage the grass I assume. Not a convincing argument really is it.
We usually go on C&CC sites as there are no extra charges for awnings, dogs, etc. and our kids are charged as kids until they are aged 18. Average cost for all of us (2 adults and 2 kids) is around £25 a night, inc hook up, which I think is reasonable for the facilities they provide. Even in high season, I wouldn't look at any site charging more than £35 for us all. Am I a meanie?
I can understand full awnings but not dogs. Having said that though I dont think they should charge so much. Only 50p per night at most. Simply to cover the cost of the extra heating and lighting people have on. I know its all on the same hookup but I do think you sometimes use more electric than you would witout the awning.
UK is deffo rip off when it comes to campaing and caravanning. We pay much more for our vans here than they do on the continent, and we pay much much more for pitches.
Ive just booked 4 nights at Delftse Hout, one of the top quality sites you can get. With generous pitch, with water, EHu and cable TV piped directly to the pitch, awning, and a cafeteria and bar on site, well stocked shop and superb wash blocks, quality laundry, and all within walking distance of a fantastic renaissance town centre. Yours for £20 pn for two. Our less glamorous French site near the ports is much more like UK sites, with mains hook up on site but get your own water from the central taps. With ACSI discount is £14 for 2. You can get the ACSI book from Aldi any time around about now for the price of a caravan mag.
C&CC charged us (members) for an awning at Easter btw.

Just dont forget to look at the total cost though, the continent is generally cheaper for pitches but factor in the cost to get there too, so you cant really say its cheaper abroad, all cost should be considered. We took our caravan to salou (camping sanguli) a few years back and although the site only cost us £12 a night, The fuel bill was £750 ! !
