That's right, but it's not a problem facing the rear of the pitch - it's often a lot more attractive to look out on a woodland, or meadow, or stream (all backdrops we've had on CC sites) than a site road! But if we don't want to put our awning up it's not an issue.
Just to complicate matters - some continental vans have a very different internal layout to UK ones. Ours, for example, has the bedroom (with fixed bed) at the front, and the lounge area at the rear.
And when camping abroad it's completely immaterial as you can generally pitch any way you like, frontwards, backwards or sideways - very useful as you can take advantage of the sun (or shade.)
