Hi guys, some of you may know that i sell Landrover parts for a living so I feel that i can throw my weight into this debate with some authority!
O K so 1.8 petrol AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!, older 2.0 xdi o k but sluggish, TD4 BMW unit excellent and reliable especially from 2002, only thing that really goes wrong engine wise is the airflow meter (MHK101130L-£165.00 & VAT)
Drive train on earlier models weak as hell regurlarly suffering IRD, viscous coupling and rear diff failure (sometimes all three together!) but as stated previously mostly sorted when vehicle facelifted. You can identify drivetrain problems because the steering will fight on anything but straight ahead position.
Hope this clears up all the misconceptions regarding this 'baby' landrover
