....because if they did not charge for awnings they would make less money....

IMHO, almost certainly they would not make less money.

One site might charge £20 all in for a pitch.

Another site might charge £18, but £4 for the awning.  If it expects one in two caravans to put up an awning - it gets £20 a night.

Another site might charge £10, for the pitch, £4 per person, £2 electric, £2 the awning and £2 a dog.  If, on this site one pitch is taken up by a single retired genteman with a dog, another pitch is taken up by a family of three + awning + electric; and another pitch is taken up by a couple who don't want electric or an awning.  It get's £20 a night.

Even though the marquee sized tents which are becoming increasingly common and take up far more space than most caravans (even with awnings up) pay less to pitch Just out of interest........ Are You a 'Tin Tenter' ?

I have seen sites that choose to charge more for larger tents than a caravan.  Sadly I can't quote chapter and verse at the moment, but I have seen them on the database of sites on here.

What I am trying to say is, if a site wants to achieve a certain sum for each pitch per night, it will achieve it by different means according to the knowledge base it has of the people visiting it's site.  It's neither fair or unfair to charge for awnings - it's business!
