Usae an atlas ..... that will tell you which roads are likely to be too narrow etc.

By 'atlas', I assume you mean a road map?

See, this is what I don't understand when people say they always use a map and have never had a problem - how does a map tell you if the road is too narrow?

Even my OS map doesn't seem to give that info...

The colour of a road is usually a pretty big clue. If you are using a white one, have a look on Street View. The very best satnav is the one between your ears.

Just returned from a tour of Europe.Used a Tom Tom XL got me around 3200 miles but with 3 mishaps. The first was travelling from Italy back to Bavaria when it took me on a route that prohibites trailers over 750Kg (over the Alps)
I checked on the road maps that i had and this road did not show as prohibited. On my return home purchased a Ventura S6000. Simulated the same route after putting all the Caravan Details yet it still took me on the same route. Using it locally it tried to take me through a no entry sign. This product is not as good as it states , also there is a simulation on the routes but it is in real time, Who has 4-5 hours to watch the intended route. For the future the AA europen atlas for 2012 should have routes marked unsuitable for caravans
