When I was young and on long journeys with my parents, I would kneel on the back seat waving at everyone who was behind me, keeping a running score of which drives waved back, gave me a thumbs up or flashed their lights at me (sad, I know), these days you can't do that because of the seat belt laws, but me and my children have come up with a game that gives us at least 30 minutes of quiet travelling.  My 4 year old son calls it the shape game and colour game.  I have to come up with a shape or a colour and my children have to find something outside the car that matches the shape or colour.  When bored of that, we move onto "things beginning with the letter......(choose a letter)..."

On our last long trip which was when we collected our caravan, my sone came out with "bum" for the letter b which resulted in the lot of us laughing our bums off for twenty minutes!

It's a good job I was not the one driving!

Try it!

Trying to decipher names in numberplates can be fun and you can get some very funny answers.  Surprising the imagination of small children when putting together a combination of letters and numbers.  Who can get the longest name can keep it going for a while.

My kids can't see an awful lot from the boot!!!

Just kidding (although have thought about it).  Play the same games as above when away.  Number-plate game doesn't last long here on the Isle of Man though.  Every number plate is either MAN or GMN, LMN, KMN etc.

We all play (except the driver)  what we call the 'Eddie Stobart game' on boring motorways - 10 points for an Eddie Stobart, 5 for a lorry carrying alcohol, 5 for an interesting name eg Norbert Dentesstrangler/Knights of Old/Prestons of Potto etc., 5 for a Norfolk based lorry - if we aren't in Norfolk, and 25 for a lorry with your name on it.
